Doyle Brunson at the 1976 WSOP

Doyle Brunson (aka Texas Dolly) was born August 10, 1933 in small town Longworth Texas. In High School Doyle was a track athlete and an All State basketball player. During a summer job, unloading sheetrock and building supplies, a large load fell on his leg and broke it in 2 places. Doyle had to wear a cast for 2 years, so that put an end to his basketball career. He still uses a crutch at times, due to this injury. While injured Brunson concentrated on his education and earned his masters degree in administartive education. Doyle was playing poker occasionally for fun during this time.

After graduating from college he got a job selling business machines. On his first day he was invited to play poker (7 card stud) and earned a months salary in a matter of a couple hours. Doyle was hooked and left his job to become a professional poker player.

Doyle started playing in the illegal games in Fort Worth Texas. These games were usually run by criminals and organized crime. Soon after this he moved to Las Vegas and this is where his poker career really blossomed.

Doyle Brunson won the World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event back to back in 1976 and 1977! In 1978 he wrote “Doyle Bunson’s Super System”. This book is considered the bible by many poker players. In 2004 “Doyle Brunson’s Super System II” was released, which is an updated version of the first book.
